１月の第２月曜日は成人の日。20歳になり、大人の仲間入りをした事をお祝いする日です。未婚女性のみに着る事を許された”振袖”を身にまとい、長いお袖を揺らして誇らしげに歩く新成人のお嬢さんを、あちらこちらで見かけました。なぜ、未婚女性だけがお袖の長い振袖を着る事が出来るのでしょうか?
The second Monday of January is Coming-of-Age Day.We celebrate twenty-year-old person becoming an adult.I saw a lot of girls everywhere who dress in Furisode, which is a traditional formal kimono for unmarried women, and walk proudly swinging the sleeves.Why are only unmarried woman allowed to wear Furisode?
私達は「さよなら」をする時、手を振ります。昔の人達はこの”振る”という行為に特別な意味を感じたようです。”振る”事によってパワーが生まれ、魂を伝える事が出来ると信じたのです。「霊振り」(たまふり)の思想です。
We wave our hand with good-bye.People in old times found out the special meaning in the act of waving.They believed the waving give them power to send their soul, that thought is called “Tamafuri”.
さよならと言いながら手を振るのは”私達は今、お別れしますが、私はずっとあなたの身を案じています。どうか無事に過ごせますように。そしてまた会う日まで、あなたの心にも私を留めておいてください”という思いを送っているのです。
We send the message with waving, that is,”We are now waving good-bye, but I’m always concerned for your welfare. I wish you live in peace. It’s goodbye until we meet again. Please, remember me.”
振袖の長いお袖も、この「霊振り」の思想からきています。”私はこんなにあなたを思っています。愛しい人、どうか私に気付いて、そしてこの思いを受け止めてください”と、未婚女性は大きく揺れる長いお袖のきものを着るわけです。
相手が気付いてくれて晴れて幸せな結婚が出来たのちは、お袖を小さく振っても彼に気付いてもらえますから、既婚女性はお袖の短いきものを着ます。
The long sleeves of Furisode is come from the same thought as this Tamafuri, like “I think of you so much. My dear, please notice me and accept my love.”So, unmarried women wear Kimono with the long sleeves waving.
After they are accepted and get married, they don’t have to wave a lot because the husband can find her easily. Then they wear short-sleeved Kimono.
“大人になる”と言う事は、そんな風に結婚もでき、大切な人とともに歩み、守り、育ててゆくことが出来るということなのです。
“Becoming an adult” means that we can get married and go through their life withsignificant others.
成人式には”困難に打ち勝つ強い精神と肉体を持つ大人になる”という自覚と責任を持って、臨んでほしいですね。
I hope the young goes to the coming-of-age ceremony with the responsibility and consciousness that they become adults with the strong mind and body to overcome many difficulties.
